Hundreds of years ago, humans were at war. They used nuclear bombs and poisonous gas, wiping out almost all of the human race. Whole chunks of the planet were being blown out into space. If this continued, their technological warfare would destroy Earth altogether.
But their was one hope. An Aasimar named Del'une decided that he could take this no longer. He rose to power in ways still unknown and took over Earth. He stopped the war and put in place rule and regulations to make sure that battle like that never broke out again.
But by this time it wasn't just humans that inhabited Earth. Creatures such as Elementals, Teiflings and other Aasimar had joined the ranks of the different warring factions. These new beings made up most of Earth's population. Humans had almost wiped themselves out, there weren't many left.
Soon, though, Del'une's power began to go to his head. He was in such a powerful position that the whole planet was in the palm of his hand. He could do anything, and no-one could stop him. He began enforcing cruel and stupid rules, bending the entire planet around his little finger. He destroyed things he vowed to protect, broke treaties and agreements.
The inhabitants of Earth fought back. The armies regrouped and they stormed Del'une's palace. War was returning to Earth, Del'une usually had no trouble keeping them out, but they began to increase in force. Soon he grew worried, and hatched a plan.
All inhabitants of Earth were injected with microscopic nanobots. These nanos rested inside their brains and steered them in the right direction - namely, away from any conflict against Del'une's plans. They didn't destroy their personality, but anything even mildly against the rules was completely wiped out of their brains. They did everything Del'une told them to without even thinking.
But the nanos had a flaw. Your brain has many different channels and passageways, all used for different things. When you are a toddler, you start using these passageways. The more you use them, the wider they become. The unused ones close up altogether. One of these passageways was the fear of Del'une.
The nanos need to rest inside this passageway, which is impossible if it has closed. Therefore, a very small amount of people aren't affected by the nanos at all. These people were never scared of Del'une. They might be total cowards normally, but being ruled by Del'une never bothered them.
These people were normally children, because they hadn't actually seen just how terrible Del'une could be. Most children were affected by the nanos, but a very tiny amount weren't. As far as they knew, there was only one adult. His first name was unknown, but his surname was Song.
Song knew that these children were the only hope of ever overthrowing Del'une. He set off on a quest, a quest that took him years and years. But in the end, he found enough children to create a school.
He found an island, shrouded in mist from the outside but lovely when you're on it, and built the school. He named it the Academy of Tomorrow, because they were forging a new future for Earth. The school motto was 'Exhibitio a Diversus Cras'.
